History

Established 1946

A long & proud history educating the children of Ashburton.

A Proud History Since 1946

St Michael’s School was established in 1946, initially using the church hall as both a school and a place of worship. The Presentation Sisters took over the school’s operations in 1948-49 during a period of post-war growth in the area.

Since the 1960s, with the inception of Government capital funding being provided to non-government schools, St Michael’s has benefitted from building upgrades. Learning programs and additional staffing have also seen great improvement over the years.

In pre-covid years, the St Michael’s community held “Fun Fairs” which over time contributed to the comprehensive expansion of teaching spaces since the 1950s. In 2019, the school took out a loan and together with funds raised through the “Fun Fairs” a brand new Learning Centre with eight new classrooms, two meeting hubs and modern, break-out learning spaces were built.

The Learning Centre was constructed around a “treehouse” concept off a central corridor, where children could engage in cooperative, studio-style learning, in a ‘camp fire-like’ environment.

The revitalisation of St Michael’s Parish School helped refresh High Street and signalled Ashburton’s move away from a sleepy, village-like neighbourhood to a vital and innovative future.

The school serves children from the surrounding suburbs of Glen Iris, Burwood, Ashwood and Ashburton.
